My name is Lindsay, I’m the daughter of a veteran. I wanted to share my Patriot Angels story in hopes to help others who are left to care for their loved ones financially and are in need of help.

My parents divorced when I was very young. My father never remarried, so I remained his only child. He didn’t keep in contact with any of his siblings. His parents, my grandparents, passed away before I was born. Therefore, I was his only family.

The month I turned 27 years old, my father’s health took a turn for the worst. He was only 67 years young. I was told by his doctor that he would need to be placed in an assisted living facility. My father’s income was completely dependent on Social Security and Disability. It was just enough to pay the bills and get some groceries. There was no way he could afford the high cost of assisted living on his income alone.

After reviewing his finances, I quickly realized we would need financial help to afford the care he needed. Being in my mid-late 20’s, I was not prepared for any of this. Then again, you’re never prepared for this type of situation.

I started doing some research in hopes to find aid to help my father afford the costs of assisted living. After hours of research & talking to people on the phone, I started feeling defeated and hopeless. Then I did a Google search for veteran aid and came across Patriot Angels “Aid and Attendance Pension.”

According to what I read, my father was eligible for $1,794 per month. Sounding too good to be true, I called Patriot Angels to speak to someone directly. After discussing my father’s current situation with a representative, they confirmed as long as everything I told them was correct, that he would be eligible for the Aid and Attendance Pension.

After finishing the conversation with the representative, I felt such a huge relief and weight lifted off my shoulders. With this pension, we could afford the care my father needed. I quickly found an assisted living facility that worked with Patriot Angels near me.

Patriot Angels helped me apply for the pension and guided me step by step throughout the entire process. They put me in contact with a lawyer that worked one-on-one with them and knew the application process. After providing him with all the required paperwork, he informed me that he didn’t foresee any issues with getting my father approved for the pension.

After becoming educated on the Aid and Attendance pension, I told my mother about Patriot Angels. My grandfather on my mother’s side was a veteran, and like both my father’s parents, he passed away before I was born. My grandmother never remarried.

My grandmother was currently living in an assisted living facility, her finances were quickly depleting.  My mother and uncle were trying to figure out the next step with my grandma, not sure how they were going to afford her care once her savings were gone.

Naturally, they were both very hesitant, assuming the pension was too good to be true. After explaining the details to them, they decided to take the next step and speak to one of the lawyers that Patriot Angels referred. Going through the same process I went through; my grandmothers’ application was submitted.

Unfortunately, my father’s health continued to decline while he was undergoing physical therapy at the rehab facility. He passed away quickly after being diagnosed with sepsis. After 5-6 months, my grandmother was approved for the Aid and Attendance Pension. She receives $1,153 per month to help cover her healthcare costs.

Patriot Angels has been a blessing to our family. By providing the Aid and Attendance pension, my grandmother can continue receiving the daily care she needs. I also know that if my father were still here today, he would have the finances needed to afford all his healthcare costs.

I hope my story helps you and your family find the financial aid needed to afford the high costs of senior healthcare. Caring for a senior loved one is never easy. Having the right resources, like Patriot Angels, will help ease the burden and give you peace of mind.
