VA Healthcare

The VA healthcare system is the largest single provider of healthcare in the United States and serves well over 9 million veterans. Not all veterans can receive care in the system. Eligibility includes a large list of criteria to include service-connected disability, non-service-connected disability, special service recognition, recent combat, Vietnam veterans, Gulf War veterans or low income veterans.

Overview and Health Programs

The VA is required by law to provide eligible veterans hospital care and outpatient care services that are defined as “needed.” VA defines “needed” as care or service that will promote, preserve, and restore health. This includes treatment, procedures, supplies, or services. This decision of need will be based on the judgement of your healthcare provider and in accordance with generally accepted standards of clinical practice.

Veteran’s Health Care Eligibility

Veterans are eligible for VA programs, as well as dependents in many cases. Final eligibility depends on several factors for each program. Check out this resource for more information on the eligibility requirements.
